Riversharks Announce 2012 Manager and Coaching Staff
POSTED: 2/16/2012 by Danielle Forte
The Riversharks are proud to announce their new manager for the 2012 season, Jeff Scott. Joining him are bench coaches Ron Karkovice and Brett Bonvechio. All three coaches have impressive resumes and will be an asset to this year’s team.
Scott was originally drafted by the Texas Rangers in the third round of the 1972 MLB June Amateur Draft. He spent four years playing for the Rangers Minor League affiliates and began managing the Bellingham Mariners shortly after. In 1983, he became the Director of Scouting and Player Development for the Seattle Mariners. Scott was also a Scouting Director for the Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals. Throughout his career, he drafted and signed Coco Crisp, Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina, among others. From 2009-2011, Scott was the Director of Baseball Operations and pitching coach for the Riversharks.
Joining Scott is a new edition to the Riversharks, former Major League Baseball catcher Ron Karkovice. Karkovice was originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the first round of the 1982 MLB amateur draft. He spent 11 years playing for the White Sox, making his Major League debut in 1986. He hit a rare inside the park grand slam against the Minnesota Twins in 1990 and in 1991, he caught Wilson Alvarez’s no hitter against the Baltimore Orioles. In 2009, Karkovice was a hitting coach for the Newark Bears.
Rounding out the coaching staff is former Riversharks star infielder Brett Bonvechio. Bonvechio was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 37th round of the MLB June Amateur Draft. He attended West Valley College and in 2001, he was Most Valuable Offensive Player of California and a first team Junior College All-American. In 2001, he signed with Boston and played ten years professionally for the Red Sox, San Diego Padres, Chicago White Sox, and Camden Riversharks. In 2005, he led the Lake Elsinore Storm, Hi-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres, in homeruns. During his three seasons with the Riversharks, he had a .269 BA, hit 17 homeruns and recorded 103 RBIs.
The Riversharks’ 12th season kicks off Thursday, April 26, at The Ballpark at Harbor Yard against the Bridgeport Bluefish. The team will play their home opener on Wednesday, May 9 at 7:05 p.m. at Campbell’s Field.
