Ben Davis With No Hitter Through 8th
Sharks are Defeated by Blue Crabs in Extra Innings
The Camden Riversharks starting pitcher, Ben Davis, pitched a no hitter through eight full innings against the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs on Thursday, July 8th. Davis recorded five strikeouts and walked one batter though it was not enough to defeat the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. Relief pitcher Chris Mobley took the win in tonight’s game, Tracy Thorpe was charged with the loss.
It was also up until the fifth inning that both pitchers were looking towards memorable starts. Southern Maryland’s starter Jarrett Santos had a perfect game until Brett Bonvechio singled into right field for the first of the only three hits of the game.
In the top of the eighth Davis’ no hitter almost came to an end when Eric Crozier hit a hard line drive past Brett Bonvechio at first base. Davis covered first giving Bonvechio enough time to flip the ball back for the first out. The next batter, Travis Garcia, forced another difficult play for the Riversharks defense. He hit a ball into center field towards Chris Walker who made the diving catch that just nearly reached the tip of his glove for the second out.
Davis recorded 5 strikeouts and walked one in his no hitter up until the ninth inning. With one out, Christian Lopez reached on a base hit to right field. Jamar Hill was the next batter advancing to first on a fielder’s choice, putting Lopez out 1-4-6 for out number two. The inning closed with a fly out to left field and the Riversharks holding the Blue Crabs to one hit in the frame.
The game continued into extra innings as Tracy Thorpe approached the mound at the top of the tenth. Matt Craig reached on a base hit and proceeded to steal second. Erik Crozier was given free pass to first, now putting two batters on base. Travis Garcia hit a double for 2 RBI’s, scoring Richard Giannotti, who pinch ran for Craig, and Crozier. Garcia advanced to third on a wild pitch on Jeremy Owen’s at bat and proceeded to score due to Kevin Feiner’s error on an overthrown ball down the left field line. Cumberland who had walked advanced to third. Christian Lopez singled to left field to score Cumberland ending the game with four runs and four hits.
The Sharks tried to battle back, but were unable to score any runs, leaving two runners on base.
The Sharks continue the series tomorrow night against Southern Maryland. Travis Chick will take the mound against Blue Crabs left-handed pitcher, Craig Anderson.
